The ‘Service Above Self’ Award – Rotary International’s Highest Honour Bestowed on Rtn. Dr. Subrahmanyam
City Doctor Honoured with Prestigious Award for Excellence

Hyderabad, 22-03-20205: Rotary International’s prestigious ‘Service Above Self Award’ has been conferred upon Rtn. Dr. Subrahmanyam from the Rotary Club of Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, in recognition of his relentless efforts in the field of palliative care. This esteemed award is the highest honour for individual rotarians and is given to only 150 individuals globally, acknowledging their exemplary humanitarian service and dedication to the motto, ‘Service Above Self’.
Dr. Subrahmanyam, an anaesthetist associated with the Rainbow Group of Hospitals, played a pivotal role in establishing Sparsh Hospice, a specialized palliative care centre in Hyderabad. The hospice provides comprehensive care to terminally ill patients and their families, ensuring dignity and comfort in their final stages of life. Notably, all services—including food, medicines, accommodation, and medical care—are provided completely free of cost. Since its inception in 2011, Sparsh Hospice has served over 13,000 patients, conducted over 30,000 home visits, and is offering palliative care to about 6000 patients every day.
A visionary ahead of his time, Dr. Subrahmanyam conceptualized this initiative when palliative care was still an unfamiliar concept in Hyderabad. His personal experiences, including the loss of both his parents to cancer, and his exposure to world-class palliative care facilities in the USA and UK, fuelled his determination to bring such essential services to the city. His commitment and selfless service have made Sparsh Hospice a ray of hope for countless families.
