Medical professionals need to be educated on organ donation concepts

There is an immediate need to educate medical professionals about the concept of Brain Death and Organ donation said noted organ transplantation expert Dr Saharia on Wednesday.

Speaking after his book ‘Living With A Kidney Transplant’ was launched, he said that lack of understanding the nitty-gritty of organ donation has led to loss of precious human organ from brain dead donor for transplantation.

The book argues with various contentious issues of organ donation and rules associated with the organ donation in India. Human Organ Transplantation Act (HOTA) and recent initiatives of National Organ and Tissue Transplantation Organisation (NOTTO) were elaborately discussed in the book.

Dr S Saharia, the chief of the Organ Transplantation Division of KIMS hospitals, has a vast experience of more than 40 years in the field of transplantation and performed the highest number of kidney transplantations in the country.

He was awarded with Padma Shree in the year 2014 in recognition to his services in the medical field. Dignitaries from medical and surgical fields have graced the occasion and appreciated the efforts of the author Dr S Saharia for penning down the real time experiences.

In this book Dr Sahariah has highlighted various issues related to organ transplantation in the country and has made effort for the common men to understand about the disease and various treatment options. This book would also help students of various medical and nursing specialties to understand about organ transplantation.

Minister for Tourism and Culture Azmeera Chandulal launched the book and said that Telangana has been very fortunate to have medical experts like Dr Saharia. He said that there has been a surge in medical tourism in the state especially because of the unmatched expertise of doctors and other experts.

He said that Hyderabad has emerged as a global centre for medical tourism in the country and transplantation surgeries are the frequent reason for people around the world to head for hospitals here.
