L V Prasad Eye Hospital Becomes A Record-Setter

L V Prasad Eye Hospital has completed 2043 corneal transplants from April 2016 to March 2017, making it the only centre in the world to have performed such a high number of corneal transplants in a year.

The centre has done a total of 23,901 transplants in 27 years. In 2016, the centre harvested 7,166 corneas and distributed 3,810 corneas to corneal surgeons across the country.

DR Gullapalli N Rao, founder and chair of L V Prasad Eye Institute explained, “We have been able to source out corneas and create awareness about eye donations, which has helped us reach this number. We are looking at doing 10,000 corneal transplants by the year 2020. We have trained more than 300 corneal transplant surgeons in India and are also imparting training to developing countries like Mexico and Indonesia.”
