Doctors at KIMS Hospitals, Kurnool, have successfully treated a 27-year-old man who had developed significant breast enlargement, with the right side more prominent than the left, a condition medically known as gynecomastia.

The patient, from Kurnool district, had been experiencing considerable discomfort because of the chest enlargement. He found it difficult to wear T-shirts and felt uncomfortable attending public places and social gatherings. The condition had also affected him psychologically. After seeking treatment at several hospitals without finding a satisfactory solution, he approached the Department of Plastic Surgery at KIMS Hospitals, Kurnool, for definitive treatment.

Following a clinical evaluation, the doctors performed bilateral chest liposuction to remove excess fatty tissue and a right-sided subcutaneous mastectomy to remove the excess glandular tissue. The combined procedure helped restore a more natural and symmetrical chest contour.

The patient was able to walk normally from the day after the surgery and had an uneventful recovery. He was subsequently discharged from the hospital, doctors said.

Consultant Plastic Surgeon Dr. Navya, who treated the patient, said gynecomastia was a relatively common condition in males and could have a considerable impact on self-confidence, clothing choices and social interactions.

“Treatment depends on the extent and nature of the enlargement. Liposuction can be used when excess fatty tissue is present, while glandular tissue may require surgical excision. In selected patients, combining the two procedures can help achieve a better chest contour,” she said.

Dr. Navya said appropriate clinical assessment and individualised treatment planning were important for achieving satisfactory outcomes in patients with gynecomastia. The patient was treated under the Aarogyasrischeme.
