Cancer Survivor Father Gives Son a Second Chance of Life with Kidney Donation

Nothing short of a miracle happened to father and son when the stomach cancer survivor father donated a kidney to his son when the young man was diagnosed with a renal failure. AINU Visakhapatnam experienced team of Nephrologists and Urologists conducted the transplant to save the life of 37-year-old son.  

The donor, Mr. Yedla Paidiyya, is a 60-year-old father who had previously undergone stomach cancer surgery (gastrectomy) two years ago. Despite the complexity of his medical history, he was determined to save his son. Following a comprehensive medical evaluation that included PET-CT scans and detailed oncological clearance, he was approved to proceed with the donation.

The recipient, Mr. Yedla Lakshmanudu, a 37-year-old male, was going through dialysis at an outside facility for an unknown reason of kidney failure. They came to AINU Vizag's outpatient department for evaluation. After investigations, he was diagnosed with a rare inherited condition known as Alport syndrome—a genetic disorder that affects kidney function, hearing, and vision. The variant found in him is typically passed on from mother to son, and daughters being carriers. Since the disorder is carried through the maternal line, potential donors had to be male family members.

Overseeing the medical care was, Dr. Uday Dipakrao Gajare& Dr. Vaishnavi, Consultant Nephrologists at AINU Visakhapatnam. Team led the case from the very beginning—carefully assessing the recipient, planning every clinical step, and managing the post-transplant recovery process with close monitoring and personalized treatment.

Speaking about the transplant, Dr. Uday Dipakrao Gajare, Consultant Nephrologist, Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology Vizag, said, “This kidney transplant represents not just a medical success, but a powerful example of love and sacrifice. Dr. Ravindra Varma and Dr. Amit Saple, who conducted the Transplant Surgery, explained that the surgery was technically challenging due to the donor’s previous abdominal surgery. However, through detailed planning and coordinated teamwork, the operation was completed smoothly and successfully.
