Doctors at Continental Hospitals save life of a women whose life was at risk due to wrong pregnancy

Hyderabad, December 28th, 2020: A team of multidisciplinary experts at the Continental Hospitals saved life of a young women whose life was at risk due to Caesarean Scar (Ectopic) Pregnancy, a rarest-of-rare life-threatening condition that causes excessive hemorrhage (or blood loss) and results into uterine rupture. Women with such serious health condition could die in matter of few hours!

A 29-year-old woman, resident of Hyderabad, was rushed to the Continental Hospitals on November 12th on complaint of continuous vomiting and weakness. Thorough investigations revealed a sack like lump on the caesarean scar (scar formed from her earlier pregnancy). The lump found suggested the woman conceived in the wrong place, which could lead to severe complications like uterine rupture and even result in the victim’s death.

Commenting on the condition and the treatment administered, Dr. Jyoti Kankanala, Consultant Obstetrician & Gynecologist, Continental Hospitals said, “Such condition is rare, and appears only in women who have undergone caesarean section previously. Considering the complexity, a multi-disciplinary effort was put up to stabilize the condition of the victim by performing uterine artery embolization, which was achieved in a short span of 4 hours. And 36-hours later, using laparoscopy, uterus was emptied and preserved to normal condition.”

“While in such complex cases uterus is severed to save the life of the victim, we were able to restore it; and the woman will be able to conceive again in the future. And was possible because of the support gynecology team received from the experts of other related fields like radiology, and anesthesia,” added Dr. Jyoti.

Though the patient was discharged five days of the procedure, she was under constant monitoring of the team of experts who strived to save her life. And after a couple of post-procedural examinations, she was recently declared fully fit to not just lead a normal life, but if she wishes, could even a mother again soon.
