A COMPLETE SKIN CARE REGIMEN FOR HOLI

The festival of Holi augments fun, frolic, and happiness throughout the country. Holi also brings along harmful chemicals in the form of Holi colours. Everyone needs to protect their skin from being in the sun for long hours and prep it so that the colours come off easily. The synthetic colours and the sun combined can play havoc on the skin and hair. Dr.ShubaDharmana, Dermatologist, LejeuneMedspa, talks about the pre and post care of skin and suggests a few steps to take care of the skin without ruining the festive mood. To have a safe Holi, it is important to use non-synthetic colours which are not harmful to your skin.
Pre–care :
1. Coat your hair with a gentle light oil like almond oil so that the colours do not penetrate the shaft of the hairs.
2. For the face, use moisturizing lotion and protect it with sunscreen SPF>30
3. Use a good moisturizing lotion or cream all over the body. Rub a generous amount into the drier areas like elbows and knees, where dry skin can absorb more colour. This forms a protective barrier on the skin to prevent the penetration of colours.
4. Protect lips and nails by coating them with Vaseline or use a good lip balm for lips. You can benefit from a nourishing cuticle oil or sweet almond oil for the nails.
Aftercare:
1. Cleanse your skin gently, using circular upward strokes to massage. You may use an oil-based cleanser to get rid of the colours.
2. Moisturize your skin and use sunscreen.
3. Wash your hair, use deep conditioners and minimal heat styling.
4. You can make your own deep conditioning hair mask by mixing ripe avocado, 1 tablespoon olive oil and 1 tablespoon honey. Apply to the hair and let it sit for 40 mins. You may use a shower cap for better penetration of the mask. Rinse off well with shampoo and condition again
5. Try and avoid styling your hair with blow dryers and straightening irons for the day.
6. Prepare a paste with milk and turmeric powder. The paste works especially well for those with sensitive skin and will provide necessary nourishment.
7. Use a generous amount of moisturizing lotion on the body after a shower.
8. Hydrate your cuticles again and use lip balm on your lips.
These simple yet effective skincare routines, if followed properly can keep your skin problem free even after Holi.
