6 years old For the boy Rare ' Fused' Kidney surgery

Doctors at the Asian Institute ofNephrology and Urology (AINU) in Hyderabadsuccessfully operated on a six-year-old boy sufferingfrom a rare congenital condition called ' Crossed FusedEctopic Kidney ' ( a condition where two kidneys are fused together and located on the same side of the body). Using a state-of-the-art laparoscopic ( keyhole ) procedure , they removed the cancerous tumor from the boy's kidney and saved the healthy part of the kidney .

This boy from Hyderabad was brought to the AINUhospital by his parents after he had blood in his urine fortwo days . During tests , the doctors found that the boyhad a rare fused kidney and a tumor in it . In such anunusual kidney structure , the arrangement of blood vessels and the urinary system are very complex . Therefore, performing surgery using the traditionalmethod is very risky .

To overcome this challenge , the doctors thoroughlyanalyzed the boy's blood vessel arrangement throughthree - dimensional (3D) imaging before the surgery . During the surgery , the exact location of the tumor was identified using ' laparoscopic intraoperative ultrasound ' and ' ICG fluorescence imaging ' technology . The tumorwas successfully removed through small keyholeincisions , controlling only the vessels supplying blood to the cancerous tumor . Care was taken not to damage the blood supply to the remaining healthy kidney .

> "In such rare cases, each patient's body structure isdifferent . With the help of 3D reconstruction and intraoperative ultrasound technology , we were able to remove the cancerous tumor without any complicationswhile preserving the kidney ."
