STAR Hospitals Launches Comprehensive Liver Health Initiative on World Liver Day 2025

STAR Liver Institute Expands Advanced Liver Disease Management with New Specialized Clinics for Early Detection, Prevention, and Transplant Support

Hyderabad, April 18, 2025:STAR Hospitals, Nanakramgda, a leading name in multispecialty healthcare in Telangana, launched its Liver Health Initiative today under the STAR Liver Institute, marking World Liver Day 2025. The event was held on the 10th Floor of STAR Hospitals, Nanakramgda, starting from 11:00 AM onwards, and was attended by healthcare professionals, patients, and community members. The initiative introduces four specialized liver clinics aimed at early detection, prevention, and expert management of liver diseases, with a focus on Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) and viral hepatitis.

STAR Hospitals is a comprehensive center for advanced liver disease management, offering integrated services ranging from early screening to complex liver transplants.

The event highlights the growing importance of liver health as a critical public health concern in India. The newly launched clinics are designed to provide focused care for individuals at risk of liver disease and empower them with tools for improved health outcomes.

This initiative aligns with the hospital’s mission to address the rising burden of liver disease in India, particularly the increasing prevalence of lifestyle-related disorders and viral hepatitis.

The four newly established clinics are:

• Second Opinion Clinic for Liver Transplant: Offering expert consultation for patients considering liver transplantation options.
• Fatty Liver Clinic: Specializing in the diagnosis and management of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) and other metabolic liver conditions.
• Viral Hepatitis Management Clinic: Providing comprehensive testing, treatment, and follow-up care for hepatitis B and C.
• Preventive Hepatology Clinic: Offering services including liver wellness checkups, vaccination, and alcohol de-addiction counseling.

NAFLD has emerged as one of the most common liver problems in India, affecting nearly 35% of the population and up to 88% of individuals with diabetes. A concerning aspect of this condition is that 7–20% of NAFLD cases occur in people with a normal BMI, particularly among Asian populations. This condition is referred to as Lean NASH (Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis), which can progress to liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, and even liver failure if left untreated. The STAR Liver Institute aims to provide early intervention for these patients, focusing on prevention through lifestyle changes and timely medical care.

In addition to NAFLD, the STAR Liver Institute also addresses the global burden of viral hepatitis, which continues to be a leading cause of chronic liver disease worldwide. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that 1.3 million people died from viral hepatitis in 2022, with 2.2 million new infections documented in the same year. Through its dedicated Viral Hepatitis Management Clinic, STAR Hospitals aims to provide comprehensive care, including vaccination, testing, and treatment, to reduce the incidence of these preventable diseases.

The Liver Health Initiative reflects STAR Hospital’s broader commitment to providing compassionate, accessible healthcare while integrating state-of-the-art treatment for liver diseases. With a strong focus on preventive hepatology, the hospital is taking a proactive approach to liver health, providing specialized care to reduce the impact of both lifestyle-related and infectious liver diseases on the community.

Quotes and Commentary:

Dr. G. Srinivas, Senior Hepatologist at STAR Hospitals, commented, “NAFLD is largely silent in its early stages but completely preventable with the right lifestyle changes. It is closely linked to obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. By offering a focused clinic, we can intervene early and help patients reclaim their liver health before irreversible damage sets in.”

Regarding viral hepatitis, Dr. Srinivas added, “Hepatitis B and C are life-threatening but preventable. Vaccination, hygiene, and routine testing can go a long way in protecting people from complications.”
