NIN Wants Millers To Process White Rice In A Healthier Manner

Did you that polished rice is extremely poor in Vitamin B?

That’s why the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) made a recommendation to the government—millers need to decrease rice polishing levels from 10 percent to 8 percent.

Mr T Longvah, Director of the NIN, said, “Rice is a good source of Vitamin B. By processing rice, we’re depriving our people of a nutrient that’s essential for them. If polishing is decreased by even 2 percent, it can go a long way toward maintaining Vitamin B in rice.”

Vitamin B is an integral part of cell metabolism. Its deficiency has been found to cause issues in absorption of foods, fatigue, weakness, constipation, loss of appetite and weight loss.

Vitamin B deficiency can also lead to neurological problems like numbness at the fingertips and a tingling sensation in the hands and feet.

So the next time you’re enjoying a plate of regular white rice, remember that you also need to add some good, natural sources of Vitamin B to your meal. Or better yet, switch to brown rice and reap plenty of benefits.
