Arthritis is a condition where there is an extreme pain in joints. The ligaments that support the joints get inflamed and swollen up and hence cause severe pain. Arthritis usually affects multiple joints, often in a symmetric pattern. Till date, more than 100 types of Arthritis have been discovered, each being associated with different causes, areas of attack and remedies. The two most common types of arthritis prevalent over the globe are Osteoarthritis (OA) and Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA).

In the case of RA, the behaviour and mechanism of body changes completely and the tissues start attacking themselves, even the joints. This is a serious case as the vital organs can also be damaged in this self-destruction spree. The symptoms one experiences as in case of RA are pain in joints, tenderness and susceptibility, swelling and stiffness in body lasting for more than 6 weeks, morning stiffness for more than 30 minutes and other similar occurrences. Patients also complain of fever, loss of range of motion, fatigue, joint redness, anaemia and limping in their walk. Women are three times more likely to catch rheumatic arthritis. Women aged between 30 and 60 years are more prone to get down with RA. This may also affect pregnant women at the time of child delivery.

A similar fate was met by Mrs. Suman Sachdeva who got affected with a serious  case of RA when she was 33 years old. She was pregnant with a son and at the time of delivery of the child, she had a sudden attack of RA which began with uncontrollable pain in knees. The pain worsened with time and gradually she had to be bedridden for the rest of her life. It has been 30 years now and Suman is aged 63, unable to walk a step on her own.

The decades-long problem of Suman was finally alleviated by Dr. Anil Arora, Associate Director and Unit Head, Department of Orthopaedics and Joint Replacement, Max Hospital Patparganj, New Delhi. He carried out a Bilateral Total Knee Replacement surgery on the patient. After 48 hours of the surgery,

Suman is able to walk once again. This is a great achievement in the field of arthritis as no proper cure is known to patients suffering from RA. Diagnosing your problem and frequently occurring pains early can help you take better care of the problem. Including calcium rich diet and foods rich in vitamin C, D and K are also proven beneficial for arthritis patients. Along with this, good exercise and gaining a proper body mass index is also recommended to keep arthritis at bay.
