In today’s India, there exists the dichotomy of a stressful lifestyle and the desire to be healthy through optimal nutrition. Dietary guidelines across the globe mention that one’s nutritional needs should be primarily met through one’s diet, while also mentioning that dietary supplements are a useful way of getting nutrients that one might otherwise lack. Given the aforementioned dichotomy, supplements play an essential role in plugging those gaps in our nutrition thereby ensuring a healthy and active life despite a stressful and demanding lifestyle. Dr Manjusha K. Ganla, Nutritionist Consultant, Acu-Slim Wellness Centre, Mumbai, speaks extensively about weight loss and Nutrition.
Today’s lifestyle choices bring with it increased stress, along with life debilitating issues such as obesity, cardiovascular issues, and infertility. In such a situation, apart from getting the appropriate nutrition, it is also important to keep one’s weight in check. A lighter, more supple body is the best defence against lifestyle-linked diseases and conditions. There have been a number of weight management supplements that have been introduced over the last decade with claims of being able to drastically reduce weight with least effort and in minimum time. Common ingredients in these supplements include botanicals, caffeine, and minerals. The amount of scientific information available on these is limited if not obscure.
Some of the popular weight loss supplements include Garcinia Cambogia, chitosan, caffeine, and green coffee bean. Most of these ingredients have minimal effect on body weight and fat, with limited clinical evidence compounded by safety concerns and adverse effects on the body. The problem snowballs as consumers take such dietary supplements without consulting their doctors or certified nutritionists who would thoroughly examine the pathophysiological condition of the patient before prescribing such supplements.
In the midst of this clutter and uncertainty on safety and efficacy of weight loss supplements, a wonder dietary fibre, alpha-cyclodextrin, emerges as a safe and effective alternative. Alpha-cyclodextrin, sourced from corn, has the unique ability to bind up to 9 times its weight of dietary fat and forms a stable complex in the human gut. This stable complex then gets excreted from the body without causing any issues such as flatulence, diarrhoea, and other undesirable effects. This is an effective and simple way of eliminating dietary fat from one’s body, thereby aiding desired weight loss. Alpha-cyclodextrin also has a very good impact on the lipid profile (LDL cholesterol, triglyceride levels) and on glycaemic control. Most importantly, this wonder dietary fibre has been thoroughly researched through human clinical trials, and has been extensively studied and certified as safe and a daily dietary fibre by USFDA (United States Food and Drug Authority) and EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) respectively. Supplements like Lipo 9 one, containing the wonder dietary fibre, alpha-cyclodextrin, are revolutionary in the pursuit of weight management without any side effects.
