Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences, (KIMS Hospitals) Secunderabad, has celebrated World Physiotherapy Day – 2019 at the hospital premises. The theme for this year is “Chronic Pain Management”. An exclusive workshop for Traffic Police on Self-Management and Prevention of Chronic Pain was conducted by the department of Physiotherapy. The workshop inaugurated by Dr. Bhaskar Rao garu, Managing Director, KIMS Hospitals was attended by 120 traffic police. During the workshop, traffic police were demonstrated techniques and exercises to prevent and manage chronic neck, back, shoulder and heel pain. Mr. Anil Kumar, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Hyderabad coordinated and made sure that the traffic police attend this workshop which will be very useful for all the police personnel working on roads

 

 

The workshop helped the traffic police differentiate between muscle pain and nerve pain and identifying risk/trigger factors and demonstrated different techniques like Posture correction - standing, sitting & driving, Simple neck stretches, Simple stretches for low back, Simple stretches for thigh and calf muscles, Strengthening exercises for neck, shoulder and lower back. It also explained the police about the need and requirement of splints like kneecaps, stockings and techniques (alternate leg weight transfer, paced walk) to cope up with prolonged standing.

 

 

Dr. Bhaskar Rao, MD, KIMS Hospitals, during the inauguration thanked the Traffic Police for making our roads safer to travel. He added that KIMS Hospitals strongly advocates the belief “Prevention is Better than Cure” and therefore has an exclusive wellness and lifestyle clinic with an aim to prevent disease and early identification of any disease. Dr. Bhaskar Rao, further added that KIMS Hospitals' will continue to organize such self-management workshops for people across professions. He said that as part of World Physiotherapy Day, similar events are also being held for computer professionals in a various company with the concept of “Wellness at Work”.

 

 

The workshop was conducted by team led Dr. Sudhindra Vooturi, Chief – Lifestyle and Rehabilitation, KIMS Hospitals, who emphasized the prevalence of chronic pain among traffic police said, “few of the common problems of the traffic police that we have noticed are Sharp pain of the heel, Low back pain, Inability to stand for long time, Osteoarthritis of knee leading to limping, Cervical spondylitis, Varicose veins, which results in inability to concentrate on work due to fatigue and pain, repeated/prolonged sick leaves. These people are prone for falls due to pain or lack of balance and may result in chronic spondylitis - inability to drive. Recent figures show that an estimated 38% of traffic police have chronic low back and 36% have chronic neck pain and nearly 18% of all traffic police have a chronic pain that affects their ability to work. This demonstration of techniques to deal with chronic pain will help them overcome their long-term issues.
