Do yellow rooms increase your anxiety levels while blue calms and relaxes you? Artists and interior designers have operated from a psychological viewpoint when they say that colour can dramatically affect moods, feelings, emotions, and even health.
It might surprise you that colour can be used as a powerful communication tool and can be used to signal action, and influence mood or physiological reactions. Certain colours have been associated with increased blood pressure, increased metabolism and eyestrain.
It is widely believed by experts in this area that the colours red and yellow increase blood pressure while blue reduces it, and green or black havea fluctuated stabilizing effect.
Experts also believe that red increases the pulse and heart rate, and enhances the appetite by speeding up your metabolism, which is why red is a popular colour in restaurants.
Blue light is a short wavelength visible light that is associated with increased eye strain than longer wavelength hues, such as orange and red.
Colours are called ‘warm’ (eg. red and orange) and ‘cool’ (eg. blue and green) because of the change in temperature we experience when we are exposed to them. Therefore, entrances in colder climates are painted in warm hues while those in hotter climes are painted in cool colours, to provide relief from cold and heat accordingly, and enhance comfort levels.
Here are some colours and how they affect us:
Red: This warm, vibrant colour generally evokes intense emotions. Red is associated with anger and aggression, but it is also a symbol of love and comfort. Wearing red has the ability to make you feel powerful, as this colour captures attention.
Yellow: This cheerful, warm colour is sure to lift your spirits and self esteem. However, it can also give rise to aggression and frustration, and is liable to cause eye strain if gazed at for long lengths of time, owing to the amount of light it reflects.
Black: This is the perfect light absorber, as it does not reflect any light. For the same reason, it might seem menacing to people, and it creates a perception of seriousness. However, it is also associated with glamour and power.
White: Diametrically opposite to black, white is the perfect light reflector and is a symbol of purity or innocence. White creates an illusion of space and is positive. However, White can also be perceived as cold and even hostile, and can therefore make people uncomfortable – such as when it is used in hospitals.
Blue: This colour promotes tranquility and serenity and is believed to boost productivity. However, Blue can also convey aloofness, sadness or unfriendliness, and this is said to be because of the apparent drop in pulse rate and body temperature that we experiencewhen exposed to this colour.
Green: This colour conveys the tranquility of nature and is the colour of balance. It is believed to relieve stress and have a calming effect. Researchers have discovered that gazing at green can improve the eyesight and reading abilities.
In a world where indoor activities tend to outdo outdoor pursuits, it is worth considering the benefits of spending time amidst nature – gazing at green and experiencing the calming effects of natural surroundings. Experts say that a few hours spent outdoors does wonders – lowering blood pressure, reducing anxiety levels and promoting heart health.
