Hyderabad, November 26th, 2020: A team of experts at Continental Hospitals performed a complex heart procedure in the city to save the life of a 71-year-old patient. Interestingly, this procedure was performed under ‘local anesthesia’, while every heart surgery is performed after putting the patient to rest under general anesthesia.

The patient, who was complaining of chest pain, difficulty in breathing, and dizziness for the past few months was admitted to the hospital on Nov 11th night. A detailed evaluation of the condition revealed the victim was suffering from a serious ailment related to heart valves known as ‘severe aortic valve stenosis’, and conventional treatment protocol would mandate an open-heart surgery!

Commenting on the procedure, Dr. Abhisekh Mohanty, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist, Continental Hospitals who led the procedure said, “Considering the patient’s advanced age and post risk assessment, our ‘heart team’ comprising of the cardiologist, cardiothoracic surgeon, and anesthetist, decided to go in for minimally invasive procedure under local anesthesia. Unlike past techniques, this TAVI / TAVR (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation /Replacement) procedure is a minimally invasive heart procedure to replace a narrowed aortic valve that fails to open properly. And this is the best option for aged patients with the possibility of an intermediate or high risk of complications emerging due to traditional treatment methods.

The surgery lasted for 1.5 hours, and the patient was fully mobile within a few hours after the procedure. On assessing his condition and results coming satisfactory, the patient was discharged from the hospital on day-3 after the surgery.

Aortic valve stenosis or aortic stenosis occurs when the heart's aortic valve thickens and calcifies, preventing the valve from opening fully, which limits blood flow from your heart to the rest of your body. Aortic stenosis can cause chest pain, fainting, fatigue, leg swelling and shortness of breath. It may also lead to heart failure and sudden cardiac death. And TAVI / TAVR is an advanced technique to treat patients with such conditions, which is available at Continental Hospitals. Commenting on TAVI facilities, Dr. Mohanty said, “Continental hospital is one of the few centers in the country running a dedicated structural heart disease program. TAVI is part of this program and includes a long list of rare and complex minimally invasive procedures done in both adults and children with acquired and congenital heart diseases.”
