Ginger, the thought immediately brings into memory a pungent aroma and a spicy flavour. One among the healthiest and delicious spices, ginger is loaded with nutrients and bioactive compounds that benefit not just the body but the brain too.
Having originated from China, ginger is a flowering plant closely related to turmeric and it is the underground part of the stem (rhizome) which is consumed. Its medicinal value emerges from gingerol, a bioactive substance having anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, making it a superfood. Gingerol also gives it the unique fragrance.
Helps improve digestion: Ginger has been used to help improve digestion since long. It has a proven history of helping ease stomach and gut ailments. Ginger also helps to stimulate emptying of stomach without any side effects. The fact that ginger aids digestion can be perceived from evidences like addition of ginger-garlic paste to many kinds of dishes. Ginger gives the double benefit of enhancing health as well as the taste of the dish to which it is added. It can be used fresh, dried, powdered, as an oil or juice and also added to processed foods like cookies and sauces. The earthy flavour of ginger is used as a fragrance in soaps and cosmetics. One of the chemicals extracted from ginger is used as an ingredient in laxative, anti-gas and antacid medications.
Relieves pain: The oil from ginger is sometimes used as a pain reliever. It relieves pain related to rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and menstrual problems.
Improves immune system: Ginger strengthens the immune system because it helps to break down the toxins in the body’s organs, thereby cleaning the lymphatic system. Ginger helps fight flu, common cold and reduce nausea, inflammation. Gingerol also helps lower the risk of infections. Ginger extract can also inhibit the growth of different types of bacteria.
Reduce cholesterol, sugar levels: Ginger may also lower cholesterol level, blood sugar level and thereby reduce the risk of heart disease. Further, it was found that consumers look to incorporate this healthier condiment to their beverages like tea, beer and ale. Ginger-flavoured beverages are the most preferred during the winter season.
Source of vitamins: Ginger is a potent aromatic herb and a natural source of vitamin C, magnesium, potassium, copper and manganese.
Aids burning fat: Research also showed that ginger plays a role in fat burning, carbohydrate digestion and insulin secretion. Studies also suggested that consuming ginger can enhance calorie burn, reduce hunger pangs and is associated with weight loss in overweight adults. Ginger may protect against obesity and chronic diseases, according to a new research review. However, it is still unclear about which formulations and dosages would be best for obtaining clinical benefits.
