An unfortunate casualty of today’s fast paced life is Breakfast. As the name suggests, it involves breaking your night long fast, and is therefore vitally important to replenish your body’s nutrients. Breakfast also kick-starts your body’s metabolism, and helps burn calories, so there is an additional reason why you shouldn’t miss this all important meal.
Missing Breakfast can disturb your body’s rhythm of fasting and eating. When you wake up, the blood sugar that your body needs to make your muscles and brain work at peak is low, and you need Breakfast to bring it back into balance. If you’re wondering why you aren’t operating as efficiently as you like because you’ve rushed to work or school without anything in your belly, then remember it’s important to break your night long fast with a good, healthy Breakfast.
Studies have shown that people who skip Breakfast are also prone to weight gain, because they tend to overeat later in the day, choosing more sugary foods because what your body is craving is energy.
Studies conducted on the nutritional and health impact of Breakfast have concluded that eating breakfast is linked to good health, better memory and concentration, and lower levels of “bad” LDL Cholesterol. It also means lower chances of getting Diabetes and heart disease, and gaining weight.
You’ll also be glad to know that if you’re a regular Breakfast eater, then you are likely to be slimmer than someone who skips this important meal. That’s simply because eating a healthy Breakfast consisting of high protein and high fiber foods first thing in the morning, keeps your appetite under control for the rest of the day. So even if you’re on a diet, remember that you are doing yourself a massive favour by eating Breakfast every single day. However, be judicious about your selection of Breakfast foods and the quantity you eat, as studies have also shown that some people who have unusually large breakfasts tend to eat more during the day. Think of healthy options like a high fiber cereal, fruit like papaya or a healthy smoothie consisting of yoghurt, fruit and vegetables.
If you’re a parent, it’s important to inculcate the Breakfast habit in your children and plan healthy menus. Studies have shown that children who skip Breakfast have a harder time concentrating and are easily tired in school. Other studies show that children who eat Breakfast have higher test scores. Yet other studies prove that teenagers who eat Breakfast have a lower BMI than those who don’t,and still other studies show that children who don’t eat Breakfast are prone to be overweight as they eat more junk food during the day.
So whatever your age, don’t leave home without your Breakfast and you’ll be taking a step towards good health and a healthy weight.
