Prostate is a wall nut sized gland situated below the bladder, encircling the proximal most part of the urethra. Normally it weighs about 10 gms. Prostate is a male secondary sexual organ, it’s secretions contribute to the semen and helps in nourishing the sperms, Dr. Gutta Srinivas Leading Urologist of Star Hospitals, Banjarahills, Hyderabad, will brief about Prostate.
A variety of disorders can affect this gland.
1. PROSTATIS: Usually affects 25 to 40 years age group. Infections can be Acute or chronic in nature. Symptoms can vary from mild discomfort to severe irritating Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS) and may or may not be associated with Fever.
2. PROSTATE ABSCESS: Mostly seen in Diabetics and immunocompromised individuals. Patient usually suffer from high grade fever, painful micturition and pain in the perineum.
BENIGN ENLARGEMENT OF PROSTATE
The incidence increases with age, usually seen a decade earlier in Indians around 50 years of age. Depending upon the size it is Graded from Grade 1 to 3.
An enlarged prostate causes urinary signs called Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS), which are of two types, namely
1. Storage (irritative) symptoms
c. Urge incontinence
2. Voiding (obstructive) symptoms
b. Poor stream
c. Interrupted stream
HOW TO DIAGNOSE?
DRE (Digital Rectal Examination): Physical examination done by Urologist will help in assessing the size and nature of enlargement
Ultrasound: To accurately assess the size and its effect on the Urinary Bladder and Kidneys
Serum PSA: It’s a blood test which helps in the identification of Prostate Cancer
Minimally invasive procedures like TURP, BIPOLAR TURP and Laser prostatectomy are the best options.

Prostate Cancer is the second most leading cause of deaths in men. The incidence is on the rise particularly in India. It is very important to note that Prostate Cancer if diagnosed early can be completely cured. A Digital Rectal Examination and Serum PSA will help in accurate diagnosis. Subsequently, it has to be confirmed with biopsy, which is done as an outpatient procedure without any discomfort under Ultra-sound guidance.
