Hyderabad, December 14th, 2020: Ms. Manjula, a 39-year-old housewife from Khammam, who consumed toilet cleaner ‘harpic’ in November 2019, was given a new lease of life after she struggled to live for 10 months by a team of experts at Aware Global Hospitals. Stomach in the victim’s body suffered stage-4 damage and was removed to save life of the patient. It is after nearly a year, the patient started consuming normal food through her mouth.

After the incident in November last year, the patient with damaged internal organs visited multiple hospitals without any relief; and eventually landed at Aware Global Hospitals where Dr. Bhupathi Rajendra Prasad, Consultant Gastro Surgeon provided the much-needed hope. The team of experts at Aware Global treated the patient for more than six months to ensure her condition turns suitable for a surgical procedure. The patient meanwhile was being given food through an external pipe connected to her digestive tract below the stomach portion.

Commenting on the procedure and its success, Dr. Bhupathi Rajendra Prasad, Consultant Gastro Surgeon, Aware Global Hospitals said, “Patient’s food tract/gastrointestinal tract got damaged, and her stomach had to be severed to save the victim. With great care the patient’s condition stabilized and she was prepared for a surgery after 10 months of the incident. Through a surgical procedure, the victim’s stomach was removed, and her intestine was directly connected to the esophagus to complete the food tract. Now the patient has recovered completely and is able to consume normal food through her mouth. This entire procedure was successful with the support received from Dr. Mohan, Anesthesiologist; Dr. Rajendra, Critical care; Dr. Ravi Shankar, Medical Gastroenterologist.

We are extremely happy with the care my sister received at Aware Global Hospitals, and it is the expertise of Dr. Rajendra Prasad that helped her recover to normal health,” added Mr. Srinivas, brother of the victim.

The patient was under observation in the hospital for 45 days to assess her condition and to avoid any further complications. She was being monitored regularly and was been called in for medical assessments from time to time. Finally, Ms. Manjula was recently declared fully recovered, and she will now be able to lead a normal life after almost a year of suffering from trauma.

Doctor recommends certain simple yet effective tips to ensure such accidents do not occur:

  • Ensure acids, spirits, toilet cleaners, and other hazardous liquids are kept away from reach of children, who could consume it accidentally
  • Keep such liquids away from people undergoing mental stress on personal and professional front, and seek necessary medical help for such individuals
  • Look for safer cleaning alternatives to acids and spirits to reduce risk of accidents at home.
