Exercise is good, but how much is bad? Basically, if you are exercising compulsively, then you need to take a step back and look at the real reason why you are exercising so much.
You need to reassess your exercise routine if it has taken over your life and you feel guilty and stressed if you miss a workout. You also need to take stock of the situation if you feel like you simply must exercise even when you are unwell, tired, or have pulled a muscle.
Over-exercising, or experiencing a nagging need to exercise, could indicate that you might have an exercise compulsion which can be linked to psychological problems which include eating disorders or obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Some people who suffer from image issues feel that they need to constantly exercise as they live in dread of weight gain.
Healthy exercise is when physical activity like walking, cycling, going to the gym, etc., is part of your weekly routine; your workouts enable you to relieve stress, and when you are not overly anxious or annoyed if your exercise routine is disturbed by an injury or illness.
Unhealthy or Compulsive exercise, on the other hand, is when you prioritize workouts over everything else, including sleep, family, etc., when your workouts are driven by stress (so that you feel anxious and guilty if you think you may miss a workout), and you feel the need to exercise even when you are unwell.
Be vigilant, and seek professional help if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms linked to over exercise:
Decreased performance when you workout, drop in energy indicating physical exhaustion, poor mental health leading to anxiety and depression, sleeplessness, aches and pains, and high resting heart rate. If you are suffering any of these side effects of too much exercise, it’s best to seek professional help.
