Flaxseeds are tiny, nutrient-rich seeds, packed with fiber, protein, minerals, and vitamins. Scientists have shown that adding flaxseeds to one’s diet can help manage cholesterol and fight inflammation. A new study has yielded information that flaxseed’s fiber ferments in the gut and influences gastrointestinal microbiota; a process which positively impacts metabolic health and staves off obesity. Researchers explain that gut microbiota is an environmental factor that regulates adiposity and glucose tolerance in humans, and that diet is one of the major factors in shaping gut microbiota and improving metabolism.
Flaxseeds have proven their effectiveness in weight loss, and are definitely one of the foods that can help you shed unwanted kilos. This is mainly due to their fiber content and other properties, including the fact that they are packed with Omega 3 Fatty Acids and Anti-oxidants, which work together to increase the body’s efficiency to burn calories.
Flaxseeds are low in starch and sugar, and hence the ideal low-calorie food.
Rich in fiber, Flaxseeds enter a breakdown (fermentation) process once they reach the gut. The breakdown of dietary fiber can create healthy changes in the gut microbiome, which in turn are beneficial for metabolic health.
Dietary fiber is divided into two categories – soluble and insoluble. The soluble fiber produces a gel-like substance, which, when it comes into contact with digestive juices and water, slows down the absorption of food in your colon, and in turn makes you feel fuller for a longer period of time. The insoluble fiber helps in promoting good gut bacteria, which aids in digestive health and increases metabolic rate.
Flaxseeds contain antioxidants, which are also called Lignans. Though these are not directly linked to weight loss, they enhance the cell functioning as your body burns fat. Lignans also provide nutritional support and protect against free radicals.
Ground flaxseeds are more effective in weight loss as they are more easily absorbed into the system, giving the body access to all the essential fats, proteins and dietary fiber present in them. Approximately one tablespoon of flaxseeds per day helps in weight loss and improvement of overall health.
