The 27Annual Conference of the Indian Academy of Neurology _ IANCON 2019 _ today stated that 10% among Indian population are suffering from chronic headaches or migraine; and the participants in the convention have listed obesity, depression and stress as the main reasons for the ailment to be growing in the country.

The 4-days IANCON 2019 convention that attracted over 2500 neurologists and healthcare professionals from across the country concluded today with a glittering valedictory ceremony. Elaborating on the deliberations, Dr. Gagandeep Singh, Secretary, Indian Academy of Neurology said, “A total of 24 symposia on various topics related to neurological disorders provided a great opportunity to the young and emerging neurologists from across the country to showcase their work through various presentations, and also learn from the experts in the field.”

During the deliberations on the controversies in the management of headaches, neurologists opined that migraines start with discrete episodes, but nearly 3% to 5% migraines progress to chronic stages of daily headaches. It has been noted that chronic migraines accounts for two thirds of people with headaches, taking it to approximately 2% of the general population.

Participants emphasized on understanding the disorder before reaching the stage to cure the ailments. Primary headache disorders are those without a demonstrable cause although we are beginning to know the pathophysiology of some, such as migraine and cluster but they are generally not life threatening. Secondary headaches are those with a demonstrable cause and one type is medication overuse headache. Medication overuse and, paradoxically, medication underuse can perpetuate headaches and lead to chronic headaches.Elaborating on the cure, participants at IANCON  2019 proposed against prolonged or frequent use of pain medications for headaches and suggested an active lifestyle that would help overcome the problem.
