The 27Annual Conference of the Indian Academy of Neurology _ IANCON 2019 _ attended by over 2500 Neurologists and healthcare professionals from across the country, concluded today with a glittering valedictory ceremony. And the next edition of this convention will be held in the Garden City of Bangalore in October 2020.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, Dr, Mohandas Surath, Chairman, IANCON 2019 Organizing Committee has thanked all the participants from related fields on making the event a grand success. Adding to this, Dr. Sita Jayalakshmki, Organizing Secretary, IANCON 2019 handed over the formal responsibilities to the organizing committee of the next year’s IANCON.
Dr. Satish Khadilkar, President, Indian Academy of Neurology and a guest of honor at the Convention has thanked the Organizing Committee for putting together a great event that will be a benchmark for the future conferences in India and Overseas. Dr. Gagandeep Singh, Secretary, IAN said that besides 24 symposia on various topics on Neurological disorders, the conference also gave chance to young Neurologists across the country and 18 others to show-case there work through platform presentations and poster presentations.
Dr. Gagandeep also reminded that the social cause of the event, through the 5K run title “Running for Neurology” which was attended by nearly 1000 registrants. Dr. Gagandeep said the run underlines the importance of physical activity in brain health. During the conference, meetings of the 16 sub-sections and the General Body of IAN was also held. The last day of the conference showed special emphasis on controversies in the management of headaches.
10% Indian population suffering from Migraine!
Obesity, along with Depression & Stress emerge as main reasons for chronic headaches
The 27Annual Conference of the Indian Academy of Neurology _ IANCON 2019 _ today stated that 10% among Indian population are suffering from chronic headaches or migraine; and the participants in the convention have listed obesity, depression and stress as the main reasons for the ailment to be growing in the country.
The 4-days IANCON 2019 convention that attracted over 2500 neurologists and healthcare professionals from across the country concluded today with a glittering valedictory ceremony. Elaborating on the deliberations, Dr. Gagandeep Singh, Secretary, Indian Academy of Neurology said, “A total of 24 symposia on various topics related to neurological disorders provided a great opportunity to the young and emerging neurologists from across the country to showcase their work through various presentations, and also learn from the experts in the field.”
During the deliberations on the controversies in the management of headaches, neurologists opined that migraines start with discrete episodes, but nearly 3% to 5% migraines progress to chronic stages of daily headaches. It has been noted that chronic migraines accounts for two thirds of people with headaches, taking it to approximately 2% of the general population.
Participants emphasized on understanding the disorder before reaching the stage to cure the ailments. Primary headache disorders are those without a demonstrable cause although we are beginning to know the pathophysiology of some, such as migraine and cluster but they are generally not life threatening. Secondary headaches are those with a demonstrable cause and one type is medication overuse headache. Medication overuse and, paradoxically, medication underuse can perpetuate headaches and lead to chronic headaches.Elaborating on the cure, participants at IANCON 2019 proposed against prolonged or frequent use of pain medications for headaches and suggested an active lifestyle that would help overcome the problem.
