World Brain Tumor Day is observed on June 8th every year. It is a day to create awareness of brain tumors which are detrimental to a person's health. First and foremost, not all brain tumors are cancerous but the prevalence of brain tumors of both types are becoming common in India. Although tumor registry for the whole population isn't readily available, however, it can be said that improved diagnosis and effective treatment have been a great boon in tackling such cases in India.
No exact cause can be referred with regard to brain tumors. Also, there isn't any specific age limit too. The primary aspect to identify is definitely having a close look at symptoms of
A consistent headache
Problem with vision
Problems with memory
Nowadays, CT scan enables to detect any brain tumor. If there is any complication, other options are available as well. In case of brain tumors, tumors can either arise from the brain or can spread to brain from rest of the body. There is a popular misconception that brain tumors are to be surgically operated and such operations can turn fatal. In reality, surgical operations are rarely opted these days. Even in such scenario, the concerned surgeons remain very careful considering the sensitive aspect of the operation.
According to Dr. Suresh Kumar, Senior Consultant Neurologist and Stroke Specialist, Fortis Malar Hospital, Chennai,” Brain tumor is due to specific cell division and there is no predictive or precautionary measure. But nowadays ionizing radiation is considered to be agents of a brain tumor. We come across so many cases where a tumor grows extremely slow, so operation isn’t the go-to method. Every case of brain tumor is unique to some extent and it is important to consider other factors as well. Nowadays we often get cases of glioma which require particular concern and a direct approach to ineffective treatment. Time and again we get calls where people ask whether mobile phones are agents of brain tumors or not. At present, we don’t have conclusive evidence on this matter but no doubt, overexposure to ionizing radiation is detrimental to health. The good thing is, at present in India, treatment of brain tumors is well within the reach of common people and even people from other countries come here for treatment. “
There is no denying the fact that survival rate has marginally increased with regard to malignant brain tumors but early diagnosis is the key to effective treatment and survival of any individual.
