Dr. Rama Krishna Chowdary (MCh), Sr. Consultant – Neurosurgery, Gleneagles Global Hospitals shares his valuable knowledge regarding brain tumor.  According to him with an increasing trend of 2% malignancies in the occurrence of central nervous system (CNS) tumors in India ranges from 5 to 12 per 100,000 populations. Research shows that malignant brain tumor is the most common type of cancer among children globally. Tumor (neoplasm) is an abnormal mass of tissue, which may be solid or fluid-filled. A brain tumor occurs when the unnecessary growth of cells produce within any part of the brain. This is a condition that occurs when the cells in the brain multiply in an abnormal way or a way that cannot be controlled. The tumor can be malignant meaning it is cancerous or it can be non-cancerous (benign). They are classified from grade 1 to 4 and this depends on their location, how fast the cells are multiplying and the spread to adjacent areas/organs.

Living with tumors presents many new challenges, which may affect a person in leading a normal life. They undergo stress and will be mentally disturbed. But, for a better treatment, one should stay strong mentally. Relax, Rest and Restore, following the three “R’s” can help you navigate through challenges and strengthen your body, mind, and spirit. Most importantly, focus on passion and do what you love. There is no cure than happiness. Silence combined with stillness is powerful for healing with offering new perceptions. Try to keep yourself proactive and engaged in actions. Don’t feel low and be committed with confidence to activate and advance healing focus. The exact cause of brain cancers is unknown although most allied causes of brain cancer are genetic factors, radiation, HIV infection, smoking and various environmental toxins.

“Recouping from Brain Tumor is indeed a journey. Exercising, spending time in nature and focusing on what you enjoy will enhance your well-being. Killing tumor is not the only focus, also teaching strategies to control anxiety is imperative. Brain tumors are now at normal survivor rate. Guide yourself to make wise choices and self-care strategies into comfort.
