September is observed as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.
The prostate is a gland in the male reproductive system that makes most of the semen that carries sperm. The gland is located beneath the bladder and surrounds the upper part of the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder.Prostate cancer begins in the gland cells of the prostate.
A major challenge faced in the early detection of prostate cancer, is the stigma and inhibitions among Indian men to share their problem. Prostate cancer throws early symptoms in the form of increased urination frequency, urinary infections and irregular urination often leading to even erectile dysfunctions.
Dr A V Ravi Kumar, head of the urology department in Maxcure Group of Hospitals explained, "Prostrate cancer is the sixth leading cause of cancer death among men. In India 15 lakh prostrate cancer cases are detected every year. But 85 per cent of them come in the fourth stage of cancer where the life generally does not extend beyond three years."
Dr Kumar stated that the chances of cure are high in prostate cancer compared to other cancers, but provided it has been detected early and the treatment began immediately.
Dr Anil Krishna, Managing Director, MaxCure Hospitals said, “Our objective is to raise awareness about the disease and also help men who are living with the disease engage in a dialogue with their doctors so that identification is early."
