All of us know someone whose life is sorted. He or she knows their life’s true calling; be it to teach, spread joy or save lives and face down obstacles.
On the other hand, there is someone else nagged by a lack of purpose. They move jobs, cities or even countries! Yet they continue to be nagged by doubts; have the choices they made in life so far, right or wrong? Could they have done things better?
And if you thought having a purpose in life was not-so-important you have got it all wrong and here’s why:
Helps you bounce back quickly: When you know the true purpose for your sojourn on earth, you face upto troubles boldly. You will also tend to bounce back quickly when faced with hard times.
Fills you with life energy: So you end up doing each task with passion and precision and end up being successful in the long run. You also tend to learn and hone new skills quickly.
Enjoy sound sleep! Since you feel more productive at the end of each day, you enjoy a sound sleep at night.
Live a long life as well: Stress is a major killer; it makes us age faster, and allows us to fall prey to several diseases. When you have a strong life purpose, all negativity gets automatically eliminated and you lead a positive, stress free, long life.
Want to enjoy all the above benefits but don’t know how to get started? Logo therapy is the answer.
What is logotherapy and how does it work?
Viktor Emil Frankl , a psychiatrist & neurologist laid out the foundations of logotherapy in his best known work “Man’s search for meaning”. In short, logotherapy, also known as “third school of psychotherapy” helps people become more aware of what makes their life meaningful, to help them live a more enriched life.
Frankl had the rare opportunity of testing his theories on himself; being a Jew captured by Nazis in the early 1940s and sent to a concentration camp, he survived the horrors of the holocaust by clinging to his life’s purpose that was to continue the work he had been forced to leave behind.
Which are the 2 most prominent techniques of Frankl’s type of therapy?
Cause: Several times, more than an unfortunate actually happening us to in real life, it is the anticipatory worry which leaves us anxious. This technique aims to break this vicious cycle.
Resolution: Try to build a distance between yourself and the source of anxiety.
Cause: Becoming fixated on something that we want to achieve.
Resolution: The more obsessed we become with achieving a goal, stress levels also get accordingly increased; and we end up becoming less likely to achieve our goals.
As Frankl rightly says “Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms – to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s way.
