Ventricular Tachycardia is a dangerous arrhythmia where the ventricles beat so rapidly that no effective cardiac pumping occurs.
This rapid beating may lead to sudden death and a high energy shock needs to be administered to save the patient’s life. When repeated episodes of this rhythm occur it is medically termed as Storm of ventricular tachycardia. This is a life threatening condition which occurs in 10- 155 of patients who have a heart attack before and carries a mortality of 80%.
A structured protocol involving radiofrequency ablation was designed by Dr B.Hygriv Rao,Director Pacing and Electrophysiology KIMS Hospitals, Hyderabad to treat such patients. A series of patients with past heart attack and this clinical situation treated by his team was recently published in Indian Heart Journal.
Each of these patients underwent ablation using 3 D mapping by a catheter which was placed in the left ventricle of the heart through an artery in the groin. This challenging procedure lasted for several hours involving a team of anaesthetists and critical care specialists 83.3% of these patients continue to survive for more than 2 ½ years. A collaborative work in this area by Dr Hygriv Rao and his team with
University of California at Los Angeles was earlier published in an international Journal.
