Marriage was thought to be beneficial for men because wives emcouraged their husbands to keep physically fit, eat properly and make regular doctor visits. So there are several physical and psychological reasons why marriage is beneficial for men. Women in contrast are thought to benefit emotionally because they value their relationship. A study published in The American Journal of Public Health showed that their a slight change in health in men who have never married but were in a long-term relationship that kept them healthy mind and body. The results of a major study in 2011 revealed that marriage definitely lowered the risk of premature death by 15%. A research by World Health Organisation stated that marriage can reduce the risk of anxiety and depression.

 

 

Christopher Fagundes, PhD, psychologist and researcher at The Ohio State University said, "The general consensus is that, yes, cohabiting has positive effects but not to the same degree as marriage."

 

 

Ideally, marriage provides you the closest relationship with your spouse and a sense of security. This feeling of security gives you psychological satisfaction and this in turn improves health of both mind and body. He further adds, Women may fare better on their own than men do. "When we look at singles and health, we see that women tend to be OK and men not so much, most likely for the same reasons men benefit more from marriage."

 

 

Women are more sensitive to hostility in a relationship than men. As a result their stress hormones reach a peak and their wounds take time to heal. Relationship troubles hamper the immune system in the long run. It also causes depression which in turn leads to obesity and hypertension. Men who are in a troubled relationship pick up malpractices like substance abuse. Both men and women are affected by unhappy relationship but they express it differently. So it is vital to work on your relationship, accept each other and be happy. Since a happy marriage will ensure good health in the long run.

 

 

Recent Research underlines the truth that marriage definitely improves health in many ways. Here are the benefits of getting married-

 

 

There is a less risk of substance abuse in married men or couples than those who have just moved in together.

 

 

Since there is a partner to give emotional support there is less chances of depression and social isolation.Since, poor social support causes social isolation, depression and loneliness and this leads to poor health.

 

 

Married people follow healthier lifestyle, eat better, go for annual checkups and take fewer health risks than single people. Your spouse provides the support guidance that help you to maintain the healthy habits.

 

 

Couples live longer

 

 

They have fewer strokes or heart attacks.

 

 

Cortisol levels are lower in married couples than those who atre single. The high levels of cortisol reflects higher stress levels and that can impair immune function in the long run.

 

 

They are less likely to develop cancer during diagnosis or even if they are diagnosed with cancer then they have better chances of survival.

 

 

Since the immune system improves then a person can not only survive a major operation but they heal sooner.

 

 

 

It is believed that unhealthy men marry at a younger age and divorce less than healthy men. This shows that marriage can change men in more ways than one. The research how marriage improves health still continues so does the debate.
