For the first time, three successful robotic kidney transplants were carried out in Telugu states at Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad. The complicated kidney transplant surgeries necessitated the use of most advanced methods and equipment. These operation were done during the month of October 6, at Yashoda Hospitals ‘Center for Nephrology and Urology in Secunderabad. The team consisting of urologists Dr Suri Babu and nephrologists Dr Urmila Anandh and Dr Suresh Babu.
Kidney transplantation is the standard of care for patients with the end-stage renal disease. While open surgery is being performed for over six decades. Robotic surgery has been recently introduced for the recipient undergoing kidney transplantation. First Robo assisted kidney surgery was done in France and at present in our country only in few centres like Delhi, Ahmedabad and Cochin it is being performed. Unlike regular surgeries for kidney transplantation where the patient receives the kidney through a larger muscle cutting process. Robotic surgery is conducted with only a small incision and involves no cutting of muscle. The Da Vinci robo system is used in a specific way to ensure vibration-free movement of the instrument thus causing no damage to the graft kidney. This ensures minimal chances of infection and faster recovery of the patient and the donor.
The patient details:
Raju Konga (35), a mobile shop owner from Hyderabad was suffering from Chronic Kidney Disease(CKD) since December 2016 and was on dialysis for a month. Finally, Robo assisted Kidney transplantation was done on October 6. This six-hour-long surgery was successful and his present condition is fine. The live kidney donor, his mother Mallikamba (70)is also doing well.
