Swine flu or H1N1 influenza - The virus which is known to spread during monsoon months is setting off alarms in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra along with other states. This year, already five people have died in Hyderabad due to this virus so far. This flu is instilling sleepless nights to many since it’s inception in 2009.

This swine flu or H1N1 virus is very contagious and spreads when an individual touch an infected surface or breathes droplets of coughs and sneezes that are in the air. The symptoms are same as the seasonal flu or viral fever. Symptoms include a cough, sore throat, and body aches. Young children, pregnant women, older adults and also people suffering from diabetes, asthma are more likely to develop severe complications.

“With the city on high alert with the spread of this dreadful disease, we would like to advise people to stay safe and healthy. Ayurveda has two approaches to deal with this dreadful virus - prevention and cure. The high-risk patients should always be on a safer side and follow preventive measures. Prevention is the best approach from the time-tested formula of leading a healthy lifestyle, hygienic practices like fumigation and disinfecting the living surroundings and belongings, balanced diet and periodical consumption of herbal decoctions and formulations. According to Ayurvedic principles balancing the basic vitals like VATA, KAPHA and PITTA in an equilibrium and safeguarding the OJAS(Immunity) is key to prevention of Swine flu or any viruses for the matter of fact. Following periodic RASAYANA chikitsa helps an individual achieve the holistic well-being to resist any types of maladies,” said Dr.SajiD’Souza, Chief Ayurvedic Specialist, KSAC Hospital.

“For treatment, we start with Panchakarma therapies as a whole or combinations of two or more depending on the condition of the disease and the condition of the diseased to detoxify the system. Then we move on to increase the power of Agni. Herbal formulations with tulsi, amla, ginger, turmeric, pepper, capsicum, garlic etc attack the viral directly and also reduces all the symptoms associated with this disease effectively and quickly. Freshly made apple juice is excellent antidote to any viral attacks. Apart from that there are countless remedies in terms of medications, therapies and lifestyle corrections in Ayurveda that can counter the Swine Flu without any side effects,” he added.
