With increasing rate of air pollution, the ways it affects a human body are also increasing. Eye problems are among those health problems.Dr Kasu Prasad Reddy, Chief Surgeon (Cataract and Refractive), Founder and Mentor at MaxiVision Super Specialty Eye Hospitals, Hyderabad , gives a quick insight into the causes and preventive measures to keep the eyes healthy
Why is air pollution a cause of eye problem?
The human eye has two parts - the dark part and the white part. The dark part, like the watch glass, is the Cornea which has no blood vessels nor is there any supply of blood. Cornea gains approximately 80 to 85% of its nourishment from air. Which is why air is important for the eyes to be healthy. Clean air has oxygen which is good for the eyes. Needles to say why polluted air affects the eyes.
What are the symptoms of eye problems when caused due to air pollution?
It starts with burning of eyes, dryness, itching, redness, inflammatory reactions such as pain and swelling, and if the problem is still not addressed, mucus and watery discharge occur.
What precautions should one take to protect the eyes from being affected by air pollutants?
The population on motorbikes is far more exposed to pollution than those inside the cars. One simple precaution one must is that of wearing sunglasses to protect themselves from UV rays. Also, one must blink often so as to avoid dryness. Don’t rub the eyes and Tear drops may also be used to keep the eyes moist.
When eyes are affected because of pollutants in air, how serious can the problem be? Will it stop at reparable symptoms or will it lead to something alarming?
That depends on the age groups. Also depends on what is the garde of the problems. At lower grades, say 1,2,3, the symptoms and severity are simple. However, at grade 5, there could be severe allergic eyes and could lead to a disease that may eventually be an irreparable damage.
Are there any special supplements that can help keep the eyes stay healthy?
Multivitamins help. Vitamin A, Vitamin D, B12 are essentials, and are applicable to all age groups.
