Those who are healthy can opt for dental implants without worrying. However, those who suffer from diabetes, arthritis, calcium deficiency which happens with age and other auto-immune diseases need to take precautions before going for a dental implant surgery. They have to consult their dentist and take special dental care.

Dr. Prasad Meka, chief consultant implantologist at KIMS Dental Care advices as to how dental implants can help those who suffer diabetes, arthiritis and other co-morbid conditions

Dental implants are safe and predictable procedures for controlled diabetic patients. It is neccessary to take some measures like prophylactic antibiotic coverage and good sterilization before the placement of implants to facilitate osteointegration and soft tissue healing. Insulin stimulates the formation and growth of bone.

Those with with Type II Diabetes their body produces insulin which is not enough and the body doesnot respond properly to the insulin produced. However, good glycemic control can improve osteointegration and implant survival. Insulin is deficient in those who have Type I diabetes because it leads to low bone density. The patients take insulin injection which promotes bone growth and strength that increases the body weight and reducing the risk of osteosporosis.

People with diabetes face dental problems. They are more susceptible to periodontal diseases, infections, inflammations, loss of tissue and gums and other tooth supporting structures like the jaw bone.

Diabetic people are more prone to tooth loss because they have poor tooth control, weak immune system that can't fight infections effectively, minor mouth infections that can worsen, chronic inflammation and erosions. Smoking and drinking alcohol can aggravate tooth disorders.

Diabetic children can also face tooth disorders when they reach their adolesence. Remember periodontal disease is both preventable and can be treated.

Those who suffer from autoimmune disorders and co-morbid conditions like rheumatoid arthritis (RA) or autoimmune arthritis where the body's immune system attacks the lining of your joints and this causes inflammation and it can affect the entire body. Sometimes, osteoporosis can cause body pain and loss of bone density which makes bone porous and weak. Osteoporosis and low bone mass can affect a person's dental health but there is no absolute contradiction in placing dental implants.

People suffering from auto-immune diseases or co-morbid conditions can be successfully treated with dental implants with careful monitoring and longer osseointegration healing period. Those who suffer from calcium deficiency might face problem while getting implants placed. Since calcium is the major constituent of the skeletal structure and it supports both teeth and gums.

Most of the calcium is stored in your teeth and bones and thus calcium deficiency can affect your implant treatment. For instance, jaw bone density may be too low to support implants in that case, bone grafts are required to build your jaw bone density to the required levels. Also, calcim deficiency can impair the healing process of the dental implant wound.
