A new born baby weighing 2.6 Kgs has undergone a rare complex heart surgery.
The Mitral Valve and Tricuspid valve were successfully repaired without any leak in 3 hours surgery.
The Baby boy heart size came down; he has been able to breathe and was feeding well at discharge.
A newborn baby from Hyderabad joined the list of world’s lowest baby weight cardiac patients who not only withstood a complex heart valve surgery but also made a quick recovery. Born with rare and multiple heart conditions, the Paediatric Cardiac Surgery team of Care Hospitals gave a new lease of life to the male baby.
Dr.Tapan Dash, HOD and Chief Pediatric C T Surgeon CARE Hospitals Banjara Hills said, "The Baby boy was referred with a very abnormal heart failure condition and was unable to come of the ventilator. A decision was taken to repair the Mitral valve and Tricuspid valve. Such a heart condition accounts for 0.5% of all heart defects at birth. They are usually repaired at an older age. Such a difficult heart surgery at such a young age in a 2.6 kg baby is performed very rarely but there was no other option."
The pediatric cardiac surgical team headed by Dr.Tapan. K. Dash completed the surgery in 3 hours. The Mitral valve and Tricuspid valve were successfully repaired without any leak.
According to the team of doctors at CARE Hospitals Banjara Hills carriers out first heart valve surgery for 45 days baby boy who was diagnosed with a serious heart condition affecting his Mitral valve and Tricuspid Valve. He got admitted due to lung infection and heart failure in another hospital at 1 month of life and had to be put on the ventilator.
His heart size and lung pressures were increased, he could not be removed from the ventilator and his heart failure was unresponsive to medications due to his severe Mitral valve and Tricuspid valve leak.
Keeping in mind the fragile condition of the newborn and the size of his heart, a specially designed circuit had to be used to place the child on bypass.
This type of surgery is a high-risk surgery and CARE Hospitals Hyderabad is proud to be a pioneer in this field, said Dr.Tapan K. Dash.
The doctors said that the child had tolerated the procedure well and would be discharged. According to medical experts, the mortality rate is as high as 100 per cent for newborns detected with such a condition and the success rate of surgeries performed for such ailments are also low.
The team of doctors involved with the case includes paediatric cardiologist Dr. K. Nageshwara Rao, Cardiac Anaesthetist and Critical Care Specialist and pediatrician Dr.Riyaj carried out the surgery.
