Stress is an unavoidable problem that is faced by almost every Indian in their course of life. To address this issue, a collaborative stress survey was conducted by Department of Mental Health and Behavioural Sciences, Fortis Healthcare and ‘No Worry No Tension’ Healthcare. Led by Dr. Samir Parikh and Dr. Sandeep Vohra from respective organisations, the survey was aimed to assess stress levels among volunteers. The stress was measured by a stress- o-meter (an online tool) for a period of 3 months. The survey was conducted in 8 cities of India, namely- Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Mohali, Ludhiana, Bangalore, Chennai and Jaipur upon 2463 volunteers.
The result of the survey showed some interesting facts:
79% of the participants cited their a reason of stress as their nervous disposition, nature, personality traits and inability to adjust in varying scenarios
15% blamed physical distress and discomfort as their reason of stress
Almost half of the participants (48%) had extreme high stress levels. They were of the opinion that seeking professional interventions like counselling and psychotherapy benefited in stress alleviation
22% participants had moderate level of stress. They believed in developing adaptive and cognitive coping mechanisms so that better addressal can be laid to their anxieties
30% participants have optimal stress and hence no need of psychological intervention was felt
People with neurotic personality traits experience feelings like anxiety, worry, frustration, envy, depression and loneliness more than normal. Such people have stress levels higher than average and have limited resources to cope with neurosis
Life circumstances and hurdles contribute minimal to high stress levels
Communication and active listening are the best ways cited to lessen the burden of stress
Dr. Sameer Parikh, Director, Department of Mental Health and Behavioural Sciences, Fortis Healthcare says that evaluation of stress levels need to become imperative in all preventive health care packages. The importance of assessing stress levels will not only create awareness but also sensitivity, humanity and understanding towards mental health across masses. Fortis Healthcare has initiated stress screening at their Preventive Health Checkups to help out individuals become aware of their psychological and mental well being.
Dr. Sandeep Vohra, CMD, No Worry No Tension, shares that this attempt has been beneficial in assessing stress levels among many individuals. This will help health professionals to identify preventive measures that can be adopted in managing stress effectively. It can even be used to avoid more serious diseases and after effects. The use of stress-o- meter in the survey is an appreciable online screening tool.
