Ring in the New Year with H mantra

Just as we make New year resolutions regarding our physical health and fitness. We also have to think about mental health and wellbeing, say experts

 

 

With more awareness towards a fit and healthy lifestyle, people increasingly are working towards it. The key to maintaining good health is the combination of many factors like regular exercise, good diet, stress management, work-life balance, healthy relationships, high self-esteem and more. Nothing can be substituted for another. Dr I. Bharat Kumar Reddy, consultant Psychiatry, Apollo Hospitals and Dr Hemanth Kumar, General Physician, Yashoda Hospital say people should have a holistic approach to life that includes health, wellness, fitness and safety.

 

 

Physical health :

 

 

Promise yourself that you would do regular workouts. The exercise should be chosen with a few points in mind....

 

 

“The physical ability likes and dislikes... And try sticking to the same pattern every day, once you lose the rhythm...you miss out the days. Try doing at least 150 minutes of exercise per week. If planning for rigorous ones should take a trainer's help and doctor’s advice,” says Dr Hemanth.

 

 

Most people think about weight reduction as the only means of having good physical health. “Exercise can help prevent heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and colon cancer. It can help treat depression, osteoporosis, and high blood pressure,” says Dr Bharath.

 

 

Apart from this they have to try reduction in risk factors for ill-health like reduction in alcohol and tobacco products usage.

 

 

“Based on their age to have regular checkups from doctors and not to neglect any identified risk factors from past years and try to inculcate healthy eating habits,” adds Dr Bharath.

 

 

Mental health :

 

 

With the lives in the cities becoming hectic, the stress is increasing. The stressors could be many.

 

 

The work related,social,traffic,.etc. “It's important to stay calm and learn to destress. Take out time for relaxation. And to spend some time on that we enjoy, like pursuing a hobby or going to a park or movie and spending time with friends and family.  And it's a good idea to stay gadget free for a few minutes in a day and meditation would help,” says Dr Hemanth Kumar.

 

 

Try to reduce stress and strain in day- to-day. “Think of stress free life, increase self confidence level and patience, have tolerance for others. And importantly think about mental wellness as part of everyday activity,” says Dr Bharath.

 

 

Word of caution :

 

 

“It's very important to follow the good habits and kick out the bad ones. Strictly no smoking and if one wants to take alcohol it should be limited in quantity as well as frequency,” says Dr Bharath.
