“I was 40, but I looked 60! Opting for a Botox treatment was the only solution I had to look my age and also to look presentable enough for my wife and daughter to want to introduce me to their friends,” revealed Rohan Sharma (name changed), a corporate professional who underwent a Botox session in early 2017. Yes, Indian men today are embracing Botox to fix the flaws of their original appearance. It could be to lighten the skin or to fix the jawline or to even change the shape of the lips, Botox seems to be the way to go.
Veteran celebrity dermatologist Dr Jamuna Pai recently said that until a couple of years ago her clientele mostly included women, however, the scenario had changed and the percentage of men wanting to opt for Botox has increased significantly.
But the big question that remains to be understood is what makes Indian men want to take beauty so seriously? Experts say Bollywood is one the major influencing factors for men in India to consider their looks as a crucial element. The waxed chest, fair skin, perfect jawline, six-pack abs, and young faces of Bollywood stars are what that has made beauty not any more a dominion meant only for women.
“It’s not just women who want to look good. These days men are equally looks conscious because women today like to date well-groomed men. This was why I went for a Botox session for a bit of tinkering with my facial muscles,” reveals 35-year old Raghuvendra Kumar (name changed), a tech entrepreneur.
So how much do these treatment sessions cost? Close to a whooping one lakh rupee. Sometime even more – Two lakh. But shelling out such huge sum of money doesn’t matter because men believe it’s worth it. “It is expensive, but I don’t complain. It infuses in me tremendous confidence which not only helps me in being more comfortable in my relationship but also make me assertive at work. While learned men may argue that beauty is only skin deep, for me my physical appearance is a component that sort of works like an anchor,” discloses 30-year old photographer Shiva Shetty.
While different men have different beauty requirements, one factor remains common – Men too want to look beautiful, and they definitely don’t seem to mind the cost at which it comes.
